Baker’s & Larners

Suggestions

Bakers & Larners

Baker’s & Larners is one of those places that proves old-fashioned doesn’t mean outdated. It’s been trading in the heart of Holt since the 1770s, making it one of the oldest department stores still going in the country and that heritage comes through in how it’s run, personal and considered, nothing like the identikit feel of the big chains.

What sets it apart is the mix – food hall, fashion, homeware and gifts all under one roof, each section put together with real care so a browse feels more like a discovery than a shop. Throw in Holt’s genteel Georgian setting and you’ve got somewhere worth a slow wander rather than a quick dash round.

THE ‘YARDS’ OF HOLT

At first visit Holt may seem just to have a couple of main shopping roads. Explore further and find the ‘Yards’ because this is where most of the small, specialist shops and galleries are situated.

Try Apple Yard, Chapel Yard, Feathers Yard, Hoppers Yard and Lees Yard.

Holt Sunday Market

Holt Sunday Market takes over the town’s Market Place and Bakers Yard once a month, transforming the streets into a buzzing showcase of independent makers, designers and food producers. There’s usually a busker or two providing the soundtrack from the War Memorial gazebo. Run as a not-for-profit, the market champions small independent traders over big brands, and many of Holt’s shops offer discounts to loyal market-goers through its rewards scheme.
